My practice is multi-displinary and includes the development of individual works / exhibitions, curatorial projects, and collaborations. Often I make work in response to the immediate environment and everyday activities from which to draw out ideas and metaphoric associations. I work with found materials that can be expanded beyond their known functions and symbolic references which I then manipulate and deploy to challenge conventions and suggest alternatives. I apply different frameworks in my practice – for example archaeological and geographical methodologies in both thinking about and making work. I have lectured in process and observational drawing, photography, digital media and graphic design at both the University of Otago and the Otago Polytechnic School of Art since 2000. I have just returned to New Zealand from a 2 year voluntary assignment working with an NGO based in Vanuatu. My role was as visual communications advisor with Wan Smolbag Theatre. This year collaborator Don Hunter and myself undertook an artists residency in Beijing in May/June 2010 (supported by Asia:NZ Foundation) which resulted in several projects including the project 'Mynah' exhibited at Platform China Contemporary Art Institute, Beijing.
